BASIC CAR CARE - HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR CAR?

Your vehicle is your main form of commute from point A to point B. Despite not having much interest in cars, most drivers have the same aims at the end of the day. First, you want your car to last as long as possible. Secondly, you want to avoid any car troubles as much as possible. So, what are the bare minimum things you should look into to take care of your car?

1. Scheduled maintenance
Every component and part of the car have its scheduled maintenance schedule. If you’re using a new car, try to follow the maintenance schedule booklet provided by the manufacturer. Normally they’ll put a schedule for the first 3-5 years of the car. But what happened after that? What if you’re using an older car?

Start by going for an engine oil change. It’s something that needs to be done every 7,000km or 10,000km depending on the type of engine oil -Semi Synthetic or Fully Synthetic. During the service, request a basic checkup of the car from the mechanic and work your way from there based on the recommendation by the mechanic. As a rule of thumb, don’t let your car go without service for more than 6 months. This way, you will be at peace knowing that your car is safe as it has just been checked and serviced.

2. Tyre
Tyre basic checking involves the tyre tread and the pressure. Start by making it a habit to check your tyres 2-3 days before any long-distance travel. Observe the tread grooves of the tyre to notice its level of weariness. In terms of tyre pressure, just follow the pressure advised on the side of the driver door. If you struggle to fill in the tyre, don’t be afraid to ask for help from the pump attendant at the fuel station or passerby. Malaysians are kind, and most of them are happy to help

3. Battery

Without using a fancy device, try to pay attention whenever you start your car. If you notice any of these signs, it’s about time to replace your battery;

a) the headlight blink
b) the radio restart
c) the clock seems off
d) the battery icon dashboard
e) the crank (the sound when you start the engine) seems weak or different than the usual

That being said, sometimes the battery just dies on you. This is because most batteries usually last about 1-2 years. Be sure to check your warranty receipt before placing a new order.

4. Wiper
Rain in Malaysia can be quite heavy, and the last thing you want is to be stuck in the heavy rain with a bad wiper. So every week, try to clean your windscreen to test your wiper. Don’t forget to also refill your wiper fluid. Just open your hood, look for a white container with a wiper sign, add the liquid and you’re done. If you want, you can use some “special” liquid that provides a water repellent effect. It helps a lot with your driving view during the rain. You can easily purchase it at Shopee or Mr DIY. This would help a lot with your driving view in the rain.

5. Sounds & Vibration
Lastly, whenever you hear weird sounds or notice any out of norm condition such as vibration, get it checked immediately. It might seem daunting to do that, but believe me, you won’t regret having an early diagnosis or repair. It helps you to at least survey the cost or to find the right workshop. You don’t want your car to break down in the middle of a drive. Plus, it might reduce the chance of having other broken parts as a result of the initial problem, which would cost you more money.
